Hey friends! 👋
If you’ve been following along for a while, you already know I wear a lot of hats—student, content creator, professional figure skater, coffee enthusiast (always), and Amazon storefront girly. Lately, I’ve added one more to the list: Social Media Marketing student! 🎓
I’m currently enrolled in Fanshawe College’s Developing a Social Media Strategy course. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing what we’re learning in class—plus my own take on how it all applies to creators, small business owners, and anyone looking to make a little more intentional noise online. Whether you’re building a personal brand, promoting a product, or just trying to keep up with the algorithm chaos, I’m diving deep into all things Social Media Strategy—and I’m bringing you with me!
So, What is a Social Media Strategy?
In simple terms, it’s your game plan. A social media strategy outlines the who, what, where, and why of your content. It covers:
What kind of content you’re posting
Which platforms you’re using and how
Who’s responsible for what (if you’ve got a team or support system)
Think of it as your roadmap to showing up online with purpose instead of just posting randomly and hoping for the best.
What Does a Social Media Strategy Do?
When done well, a social strategy gives you clarity and direction. It helps you:
Define your brand voice – Are you cheeky and bold? Soft and informative? Knowing this helps every caption feel consistent and you.
Choose the right platforms – You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be where your people are.
Set measurable goals – Likes are cute, but link clicks, saves, engagement rates, and sales tell the real story.
Plan out your content calendar – So you’re not scrambling to post in between meetings or coffee runs.
Measure what’s working (and what’s not) – So you can spend more time doing what’s actually moving the needle.
Why Does a Strategy Even Matter?
Because let’s be real—social media can feel overwhelming. But having a strategy makes things smoother and way less stressful. It helps you:
Build real authority in your space (not just be “someone else doing the thing”)
Engage with your audience in a meaningful way
Reach your goals without burning out
Align your messaging across platforms
Stay current as trends and technology shift
Basically, a good strategy keeps you in the driver’s seat—even when the algorithm is doing its thing. 🙃
Steps to Creating a Social Media Strategy That Actually Works
Here’s a breakdown of what I’m learning in class—and how I’m translating it into real-life action:
Know Who You’re Talking To
Define your dream audience. Who are they? What are they interested in? How can you serve them?
Make It Easy to Shop
Incorporate tools like LTK, Amazon Storefront, and tagged links so your audience can shop what you share, effortlessly.
Optimize Your Profiles Like a Pro
Use the right keywords in your bio, captions, and username so your content is discoverable.
Don’t Be Everywhere—Be Where It Matters
Choose the 1–3 platforms that make the most sense for your brand and audience. Consistency > presence.
Speak the Platform’s Language
Customize your content to fit each platform while staying true to your voice.
Work Smarter, Not Harder—Repurpose!
Reuse your best content in new ways to save time and increase visibility.
Think About the Customer Experience
Have a plan for responding to comments, DMs, and questions. Treat your audience like VIPs.
Create a Realistic Posting Plan
Set a schedule that works for you. Batch content when you can, and stay flexible.
Have Actual Conversations
Engage with your community. It’s not about broadcasting—it’s about connection.
Check the Stats That Matter
Track the metrics that align with your goals. Likes are just the beginning.
Stay Flexible and Evolve
Be willing to pivot. Your strategy should grow as your brand and audience do.
That’s just the beginning! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down each of these steps, sharing what’s working (and what’s not) from my own experience, and diving into some behind-the-scenes planning. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by social media or unsure how to create a strategy that works for your life and goals—I got you. 🤍
