A Week in Tupelo, Mississippi: What We Did and Could Have Done

Tupelo, Mississippi, is a charming Southern city with an incredible mix of history, culture, and hidden gems. From exploring its ties to Elvis Presley to enjoying fantastic coffee shops and outdoor adventures, this lively town has no shortage of things to do.

Here’s a rundown of what we experienced during our visit and a list of the spots we couldn’t squeeze in—but we are already planning for next time!

What We Did

Coffee Breaks to Remember

Coffee lovers rejoice—Tupelo knows how to do coffee right. We explored three standout spots that made our mornings (and afternoons) delicious:

  1. Lost + Found Coffee

This little gem stole our hearts with its clean, minimalist vibe and perfectly crafted espresso drinks. The baristas were so friendly, and the atmosphere made it a great spot to recharge. We also CRUSHED the invisible puzzle while we sipped our coffees.

  2. Awaken Coffee

Awaken Coffee is a cozy café with a welcoming atmosphere. It serves some of the best matcha lattes we’ve ever had. It’s the perfect place to sip on something warm while catching up with friends or journaling about your trip.

  3. Strange Brew Coffeehouse

It’s easy to see why Strange Brew is a local favourite. Their creative lattes, like the iced blueberry muffin latte, are next-level delicious, and the space feels like a home away from home.

The King’s Beginnings: Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum

No trip to Tupelo would be complete without visiting the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum. This historic site includes the humble two-room house where Elvis was born, a museum chronicling his early life, a chapel, and peaceful memorial gardens. Walking through this space gave us a glimpse into the humble beginnings of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s a must-see for any music lover or history enthusiast.

What We Couldn’t Fit In (But Wish We Had)

Even though we made the most of our time, Tupelo has much more to offer. Here’s what we’ll be planning for our next visit:

Local Eats

  1. Johnnie’s Drive-In

This nostalgic diner is one of Elvis Presley’s childhood hangouts. It serves classic Southern meals and cheeseburgers. Sitting in the same booth where Elvis once sat would be a memorable experience!

  2. Neon Pig Cafe

Home of the famous Smash Burger, this butcher shop-slash-restaurant is beloved for its inventive menu and fresh ingredients.

  3. Kermit's Soul Kitchen

Known for Southern comfort food made with local ingredients, Kermit’s is said to have some of the best shrimp and grits in the area.

  4. Blue Canoe

With live music, craft beers, and Southern-inspired dishes like “crack dip,” this laid-back spot is the place to unwind after a day of exploring.

Outdoor Adventures

  1. Natchez Trace Parkway

This scenic route is perfect for a drive or a bike ride. It has beautiful trails and overlooks that showcase Mississippi’s natural beauty.

  2. Ballard Park

It is a family-friendly spot with walking trails, a lake for fishing, and a fantastic playground for kids (or young-at-heart adults).

  3. Tupelo Buffalo Park & Zoo

This zoo is a fun way to spend a day. Visitors can see buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and more up close.

Must-See Attractions

  1. Downtown Tupelo

Tupelo’s downtown area has charm and photo-worthy spots, from colourful murals to unique boutiques and antique shops.

  2. Tupelo Hardware Company

This iconic store is where Elvis famously got his first guitar, and it’s still open for visitors.

  3. Gumtree Museum of Art

It is a small but delightful museum featuring local artists and rotating exhibits.

  4. Tupelo Automobile Museum

Home to a collection of vintage and classic cars, this museum is a must for car enthusiasts.

  5. Veterans Park

With walking trails, a lake, and a moving Vietnam memorial wall, this peaceful park is ideal for reflection or a stroll.

Final Thoughts

Tupelo surprised us in the best ways. From its rich history and iconic ties to Elvis Presley to its vibrant coffee culture and outdoor beauty, this small city packs a big punch. While we loved what we experienced, there’s still much left to explore, giving us the perfect excuse to return.

If you’re planning a visit, take our advice: come hungry, bring your camera, and carve out extra time to soak up everything Tupelo has to offer.

Until next time, Tupelo!
